As a cardinal rule, we believe in healthy balanced meals throughout the year. Every now and again, when we push ourselves a little too hard or feeling a bit too bloated, we like to hit a reset button by trying something different. Our latest experiment was a three-day “cleanse” through Pressed Juicery, a Los Angeles-based company that offers fresh, cold-pressed juices. Detoxing can be a bit controversial at times. Some people swear by them, while others run the other way. Our opinion falls somewhere in the middle. Pressed Juicery has some delicious mixes that we would enjoy occasionally, so we decided to give a full cleanse a try!

Types of Cleanses
Pressed Juicery has three preset cleanses with six 16-ounce drinks for each day. Each of the three cleanses is available in one-, three-, or five-day option:

  • Cleanse 1 is designed for first-timers and people who need a higher caloric intake due to their activity level or hunger concerns. It’s also considered the most filling containing two almond milk beverages and four juices.
  • Cleanse 2 is Pressed Juicery's most popular cleanse. It includes five juices and one almond milk beverage.
  • Cleanse 3, for green juice lovers, has four green juices, one drink made with aloe vera, coconut, and cucumber, and one almond milk beverage.

I happen to love green juice and didn’t want a lot of sugar, so I decided to go with Cleanse 3 three-day option. Go hard or go home right? My six juices were the following:

  • #1 Greens 1 (kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, cucumber, celery, lemon)
  • #2 Citrus 1 (cucumber, pineapple, lemon, coconut, filtered water aloe vera)
  • #3 Greens 2 (kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, cucumber, celery, apple, lemon,)
  • #4 Dandelion Pear (kale, spinach, romaine, cucumber, celery, lime, mint, dandelion, pear) (Note this was a switch out, I love this flavor!)
  • #5 Greens 3 (kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, cucumber, celery, apple, lemon, ginger)
  • #6 Vanilla Almond (almonds, dates, vanilla bean, sea salt)

The cleanse also comes with aloe vera and chlorophyll cleanse waters. The aloe is supposed to help soothe your digestive system, while chlorophyll helps keep you hydrated. It sounds more alarming than it is. The flavors are very mild.
Preparation
They recommend cutting out meat, dairy, processed sugar, caffeine and alcohol in the days leading up to a cleanse. I will be honest, I did not cut out the caffeine beforehand because...you know, coffee. But, I did try to limit the other things. Try being the operative word here.

Day 1
The goal was to drink a juice every two hours, ending with the Aloe Vera water right before bed and sipping the Chlorophyll water throughout the day. Real talk, the juice is delicious, especially for a green juice. My selection wasn’t very sweet, but thank goodness they weren’t bitter like other brands I've tried. My absolute favorite one was Citrus 2.

Physically, I felt good until about 3:00 p.m. when I hit a wall. Despite drinking a lot of water in addition to the juices, I had a slight headache from not having any coffee that day and was feeling a bit hungry. I made it through my evening workout and chugged that vanilla almond milk like my life depended on it.  By the time 9:00 p.m. rolled around, I was ready to hit the hay. Day one wasn’t too bad, so I thought the next two days should be pretty easy.

Day 2
Ok, so day two was the hardest. The juices were still delicious, and the headache went away, but my body started craving all the sweet things! Cravings are actually normal during a detox or cleanse. It is a great way to figure out your body’s trigger points and what you probably had a little too much of the last couple of days. Nonetheless, I powered through the day like a boss, and I wasn’t hungry at all. I also decided not to work out that night because I didn’t want to push myself too hard. Again, I went to bed before 10:00 p.m., but I was ready for the next day.

By the way, the Aloe Vera juice does stimulate the digestive system. I’ll just leave that there.

Day 3
Day three was by far the easiest day. Maybe it was a sense of relief that it was the last day or perhaps my body accepted this as the new normal, but I felt great! I woke up before my alarm clock and went to a yoga class that morning. I wasn’t hungry throughout the day, and I almost forgot to drink the mid-afternoon juice. I decided to end the evening with a big salad and a bowl of my favorite fruit to celebrate. I’m pretty sure I was supposed to wait until the next day but oh well!

The Final Results
For me, this experiment was not about weight loss. However, I did lose about 1.5 pounds in water weight, and my stomach was flatter. On the inside, I felt amazing and clean on the inside.

Would I do it again?
I would definitely do it again, although I would probably prep a little better to avoid the headaches.  Juice cleanses are not for everyone, but I think they are worth a try if you are up to the challenge.

Remember that Pressed Juicery isn’t just about cleanses. Stop by and try some of their yummy juice as a treat or afternoon refresher! One of my favorites is Strawberry Almond Signature Blend!
