Run this Town DTLA: The Jyim
This month we are exploring some new studios and healthy eats in the Los Angeles downtown neighborhood. What was our first stop? The Jyim located in the heart of DTLA’s Art District. This studio, founded by Jyima Ofori-Atta, a certified personal trainer, offers a mix of group classes, personal training, and recovery sessions. They even provide a Self-Defense Bootcamp! It’s no secret we love a good boxing class. Why? It’s challenge, fun, and some days feels like therapy, so we decided to give their boxing class a try!
The first thing we noticed about the studio was the efficient utilization of space. Every space is broken up into a workout station, cardio equipment on one side, open floor space, carved out space for heavy boxing bags and TRX ropes, and a whole room filled with weights. The check-in process was super easy, and we jumped right into the workout.
Never boxed before? No Problem! Jyima is patient and knowledgeable. He gives you a series of exercises to get the body warm and strengthen your core. He also takes time to go over every punch: jab, cross, hook, and body shot before putting you on the bags. By the time you get to the bags, you felt ready to fight like a champ! With everything from Drake to Outkast blasting throughout the studio, you can’t help but feel a little disappointed that class ended so soon!
